Karnik Shakya, has been involved with fitness and training for more than 17 years now and is presently serving as a coach at Tranquility Gym. From joining the Universal Gym as an amateur fitness freak to now becoming a professional gym trainer, Karnik has come a long way from choosing to become a model to a bodybuilder.
We interacted with him, learnt more about fitness and training and the plus factor one could find with Tranquility Gym.
What is the best thing you love about fitness and training?
It has been my passion now. I love teaching people what I know and that provides me immense satisfaction. It’s not just about being fit, but also involves looking fit for which everything has to be managed from sleep to the diet.
Why is regular gym required?
During exercise we increase our cardiovascular fitness through strengthening our heart and lungs and we increase our strength through creating lean muscle. In fact, the studies have shown that an increase in strength and cardio fitness levels can help reduce the risk of health concerns and diseases, including:Heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes (type II), depression and other stress related illnesses.
Some of the hassles you see the beginners face?
It depends on the people. If someone has been involved with sports from the initial phase, it might not be a problem. But those who are not into this, might face dizziness and muscle cramps. But they should understand that this is normal and should not immediately stop the gym.
Tips to gain muscle and lose weight?
There is a misconception among people that exercise helps to lose weight. But it has nothing to do with that. Exercise just helps to burn calories and it depends upon your intake of calories whether you will gain or lose. A normal male requires 2200-2500 calories while a female requires 2000-2200 calories. Now if someone eats less than the required calorie, he/she starts losing weight and vice versa. What I usually see is people come and burn a lot of calories here, but if they go and have just one Lal Mohan, that will waste all your hard work in the gym. Every 1500 calorie equals to 1-pound weight.That’s how one should calculate his/her calorie intake.
What is your take on supplements and other protein powders?
Taking supplements is not unhealthy. But, if you are able to fulfill the amount of protein and carbohydrate in your daily diet, there’s no need to take supplements. But I feel a normal Nepalese has a habit of eating 3 times a day which usually gets stored as belly fat and doesn’t convert into energy. But the supplements get converted to energy or gets into the muscles.
Your advice for a healthy and fit body?
It’s not just about managing your calorie intake but also about eating a healthy food side by side. If a person who is usually taking 4000-4500 calorie directly comes down to 1500, this might result in weakness. So, for this one should try to intake the right protein, carbohydrate, Vitamin E, B12, calcium and other diet as per one’s regular intake and capacity.
Why do you recommend people to join Tranquility Gym?
Honestly speaking, among all the places I have worked till date, Tranquility is far better and managed. It might be because it is a hotel-based fitness center but one cannot deny the fact that the investment made for the convenience of the members is of the top quality. The clients here are now habituated to using multiple facilities now. The cleanliness of the gym cannot be compared to any other gyms out there. Talking about the complains, you will find that anywhere because there are many clients and each one of them have their own individual demands.
